9. The Excavation

It’s been a bit of slow start to get to the point of excavation, if I’m being completely honest. As we all know the housing industry is HOT in Colorado right now. With historically low inventory, more and more people are building, which means subcontractors are busier than ever.

John Kennedy, our GC, has been trying to get the right people out to our build site, but it hasn’t been easy. Top that with an unusually rainy summer this season, and we’ve been in for a challenge.

Nevertheless, John and his guys have managed to make some progress with cutting in the new driveway and digging out the foundation and septic system.

Luckily, John’s team was able to dig the foundation without blasting but were only able to dig about six feet down for the leach field before hitting solid granite. Blasting for the septic system is scheduled to happen today!

Here are some before and after pictures.

Didn’t take long until we needed to upgrade to a bigger machine. There were a lot of large granite rocks under the top soil!

Picture of the tail-end of the driveway. We took out a handful of small aspen trees and a dead bush but tried our best to minimize the impact to the land.

Here are some of the big granite pieces that were removed. They will be used for future landscaping.
